Updated October 22, 2026: Replaced an unsupported claim that flood risk “increased significantly in 2026” with sourced figures, and added how Texas marks flood damage on titles plus free and low-cost official tools for checking a vehicle.

Texas has seen its fair share of severe weather, and flooding can leave lasting damage on vehicles that is not always obvious at first glance. Carfax estimated that as many as 45,000 vehicles were damaged by flooding in mid-2025 storms in states including Texas, and that Texas and Florida lead the nation in flood-damaged cars already on the road (Carfax, August 2025). Those cars can turn up for sale anywhere. At Trilux Motors, we believe every buyer deserves full transparency.

Why Flood Damage Matters

Water damage can corrode electrical systems, ruin airbags, and cause mold that affects air quality. Even after drying, these issues can lead to expensive repairs, safety risks, and rapid depreciation. Many flood-damaged cars end up back on the market with clean-looking titles, because not every flooded car was insured or reported.

How Texas Marks Flood Damage

When an insured vehicle is totaled because of flood damage alone, Texas issues a salvage or nonrepairable title with a “FLOOD DAMAGE” remark, and that remark is carried forward on later titles (TxDMV Salvage Manual). Be extra careful with any “rebuilt” title, and always ask why the vehicle was declared salvage.

Key Warning Signs

  • Musty or moldy smell inside the car
  • Water lines or silt in the trunk or under seats
  • Corrosion on metal parts or wiring
  • Airbags that have been replaced or warning lights on
  • Inconsistent service history or gaps in records
  • Price significantly below market value

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Always get a professional vehicle history report (Carfax, AutoCheck)
  2. Run the VIN through the free NICB VINCheck and get an NMVTIS report to see title brands
  3. Have an independent mechanic perform a thorough inspection
  4. Check the title for a “FLOOD DAMAGE” remark or salvage brand
  5. Test all electronics and look for moisture in headlights
  6. Follow TxDMV’s flood damage checklist

Buying a used car in Texas requires extra caution. A clean title does not always mean a clean history. At Trilux Motors, every vehicle undergoes a multi-point inspection that includes flood damage checks. We only offer cars with verified clean titles and full disclosure.
